THE DESIGN, ANALYSIS, & APPLICATION OF MULTI-MODAL REAL-TIMEEMBEDDED SYSTEMSbyMASUD AHMEDDecember 2014 Advisor: Dr. Nathan FisherMajor: Computer ScienceDegree: Doctor of Philosophy For many hand-held computing devices (e.g., smartphones, tablet computers, and GPS re-ceivers), multiple operational modes are preferred because of their flexibility. In addition to theirdesignated purposes, some of these devices provide a platform for different types of services, which include rendering of high-quality multimedia. Upon such devices, temporal isolationamong co-executing applications is very important to ensure that each application receives anacceptable level of quality-of-service. In order to provide strong guarantees on services, mul-timedia applications and real-time control systems maintain timing constraints in the form ofdeadlines for recurring tasks. A flexible real-time multi-modal system will ideally provide sys-tem designers the option to change both resource-level modes and application-level modes. Ex-isting schedulability analysis for a real-time multi-modal system (MMS) with software/hardwaremodes are computationally intractable. In addition, a fast schedulability analysis is desirable ina design-space exploration that determines the “best” parameters of a multi-modal system byrepeated application of the MMS schedulability analysis. The thesis of this dissertation is: The determination of resource parameters with guaranteed schedulability for real-time systems that may change computational requirements over time is expensive interms of runtime. However, decoupling schedulability analysis from determining the

Evaluating the Efficiency of Firms with Negative Data in Multi-Period Systems: An Application to Bank Data
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a mathematical technique to evaluate the performance of firms with multiple inputs and outputs. In conventional DEA models, the efficiency scores of Decision Making Units (DMUs) with non-negative inputs and outputs are evaluated in a special period of time. However, in the real world there are situations wherein performance of firms must be evaluated in multip...

Introduction One way to increase software system adaptability is to allocate resources dynamically at run-time rather than statically at design time. For example, fine-grained run-time allocation of processor utilization and network bandwidth creates an opportunity to execute multi-modal operations. This allocation strategy enhances adaptability by combining deterministic and non-deterministic ...
متن کاملApplication of UML in Real-Time Embedded Systems
The UML was designed as a graphical notation for use with object-oriented systems and applications. Because of its popularity, now it is emerging in the field of embedded systems design as a modeling language. The UML notation is useful in capturing the requirements, documenting the structure, decomposing into objects and defining relationships between objects. It is a notational language that ...
متن کاملPlatform-Based Embedded Software Design for Multi-vehicle Multi-modal Systems
In this paper, we present a methodology for the design of embedded controllers for multi-vehicle multi-modal systems. Our methodology is predicated upon the principles of platform-based design, which uses layers of abstraction to isolate applications from low-level system details and yet provides enough information about the important parameters of the lower layers of abstraction, to modularize...

Multiple operating modes can be found in many embedded devices (e.g., smart-phones) to efficiently utilize device resources. As similar advantages are also preferred under realtime settings, there have been researches to develop realtime multi-modal systems. However, many commerciallyavailable embedded devices still depend on unimodal operations even for inherent multi-modal systems (e.g., auto...
